John Hughes was announced as the Dunfermline manager on Friday 12th November 2021. The 57 year old succeeded Peter Grant but resigned after Dunfermline`s relegation to Scottish League One at the end of the season.
Hughes had a playing career that spanned 18 seasons during which time he made 484 appearances for Berwick Rangers, Swansea City, Alloa Athletic, Falkirk, Celtic, Hibernian and Ayr United.
His first managerial position was at Falkirk as co-manager with Owen Coyle, he took full charge in the summer of 2003. There followed was a successful six-year period in which Falkirk won a First Division and Challenge Cup double in 2004-05. Hughes then established the Bairns in the Premier League and led them to the 2009 Scottish Cup final where they narrowly lost out to Rangers.
Hughes` success at Falkirk earned him a return to Hibs in June 2009, a club he had played for between 1996 and 2000. In his only full season in charge Hibs finish fourth in the SPL, securing European qualification.
Hughes left Hibs by mutual consent in October 2010 and would spend 16 months out of the game before accepting the Livingston job in February 2012. Livi would go on to record a fifth-placed finish in the First Division before after a stay of nine months Hughes left the club for Hartlepool in November 2012.
Hughes took the job in the midst of a 20 match run without a win and despite winning a Manager of the Month Award Hartlepool were relegated to League Two in 2013 and he was sacked.
Hughes returned management at Inverness Caledonian Thistle in December 2013, and he took them on a journey that saw them lose out to Aberdeen in the 2014 League Cup final, finish third in the Premier League and to victory in the 2015 Scottish Cup Final before leaving in May 2016.
Next managerial appointment was at Raith Rovers in February 2017. Raith finished second from bottom in the Championship and were relegated following a play-off final defeat against Brechin.
Hughes` next charge was at Ross County where he transformed the Staggies` fortunes after taking charge in December 2020. They were four points adrift at the foot of the Premiership when he arrived but ultimately finished in 10th spot.
Alas his magic did not work for Dunfermline and after the team finished ninth, lost the Championship play off semi final to Queens Park.
