Neil Lennon left Somerset Park struggling to understand how his Dunfermline side could dominate so completely and still leave with only a point.
Josh Cooper`s 53rd-minute penalty put the Pars ahead, but Kevin Holt equalised five minutes later, and despite a huge number of chances the visitors could not find a winner.
"I am angry, it`s unacceptable the chances we missed," said Lennon. "Look, the performance is magnificent, probably the best since I`ve been here. The result`s not, and that`s down to our finishing. And it`s no excuse, I have no answers for you. I have no explanation or anything else."
Without a match for three weeks due to international call ups, Neil Lennon named an unchanged Dunfermline starting eleven from last time out away to Morton.
Gary Naysmith`s Ayr United were seeking their first home win since the opening day of the league season on the back of an impressive away win at Livingston the previous Saturday. Initially there was only one change to the Ayr line up - Ethan Walker coming in for striker Ross Taylor who saw red against Livi but Leon King pulled up in the warm up so Nick McAllister was drafted in.
So it was the fifth placed Fifers v sixth placed Honest Men as captain Reece Lyon kicked off for the hosts attacking the goal at the away end. Dunfermline threatened within the first minute, Rory Macleod making the break and threading the ball into the path of Andrew Tod as he advanced into the left side of the Ayr box but his first touch was heavy and the defence snuffed out the chance.

Macleod tried a 4th minute effort from 30 yards but his left foot sent the ball wide right. The visitors shown great intent forcing Ayr back into their own half where the defence was served several warnings of the danger that Dunfermline could unleash. Then in just tenth minute Josh Cooper forced an opening on the left to cross for Macleod in front of goal but his low attempt was stopped by Ayr keeper Harry Stone.
Next minute the yellow kitted stopper pushed a very good Olamilekan Adams effort around his right hand post after the pace of the 21 year-old Nigerian striker proved too much for central defender Kevin Holt. Less than quarter of an hour into the match and the home support were describing the onslaught as a battering.
From the left Macleod teed up Tod to switch the ball for Allan Oyirwoth ten yards out but the home defence blocked out the Ugandan`s shot. Adams sent a shot across goal and out well beyond the right upright.
Sam Cleall-Harding got some words of warning from referee Dan McFarlane as Ayr were awarded a free kick 20 yards into the Pars half on the left side. Scott McMann curled the ball into the Fifers box to be met by Holt but his header was well off target.
Midway through the half rain of biblical proportions pelted down over Somerset Park and it briefly dampened the Pars efforts. Alfons Amade`s foul on Owen Stirton earned Ayr a 25th minute free kick that Walker fired over the four man Pars wall and Aston Oxborough`s crossbar.

Back on the offensive a Cooper corner was headed away by Liam Dick. Cooper`s pass to Adams in 29 minutes set up the striker but his shot from the left side met the sidenetting. Then Robbie Fraser set up Tod but his shot went wide right.
Cooper got the better of McAllister who tried to haul him down on the corner of the box but having ridden the challenge the Pars no.33`s shot was blocked. Nurudeen Abdulai and Cleall-Harding found themselves drawn upfield the latter powering a 42nd minute shot over the bar from 30 yards out. Oyirwoth looked to have a great chance 25 yards out but powered his shot high over target. Cooper drove a 45th minute shot at Stone and then crashed a fierce added time effort on target from the 18 yard line that again Stone stopped.
It was a half that had been totally dominated by Dunfermline with 74% possession. They had made their opponents defend for long periods, forced them into misplaced passes and continually overturned possession. It seemed like only a matter of time before the Ayr net would be found, the only question when and by whom.

The second half started with two gilt edged chances for Ola Adams. A poor clearance by Stone saw Tod steal his way into the left side of the box and square for Adams but there was a defender back on the line and the shot hit him. Almost immediately Cooper grabbed possession on the left side of the Ayr box and again Adams shot was kept out, off Holt for a corner.

More intricate play deep into the Ayr box ended up with Luke McBeth downing Tod. The referee pointed to the penalty spot. COOPER took responsibility for the 53rd minute penalty kick dispatching it into right side of Stone`s goal. 0-1
It looked like play would continue in its previous fashion with a Macleod cross seeking Tod`s head in the six yard box held by Stone. Ayr levelled however just five minutes later, although the goal looked very likely to have been offside. Whyte won a free kick on the right, and HOLT`s low drive through a crowded box squirmed over the line off Owen Stirton. The Dunfermline keeper and his defenders complained vigorously, but to no avail. 1-1

There was a determined effort to restore the lead with Tod, Fraser and Macleod in particular fighting hard to retain possession and set up chances. Oli Shaw replaced the luckless Ola Adams before in 74th minutes Ayr kept out to two power packed on target shots. MacLeod`s attempt was saved and Tod`s deflected wide off Dick. Venturing forward Abdulai had claims for a penalty disregarded and another Macleod ball across face of goal evaded Oli Shaw.
It was Oxborough who had to make the next save when an 81st minute corner was met by the recently introduced sub Marco Rus. Back to the other end and a 86th minute Bray shot was deflected for a corner. Taken short it eventually produced a near thing when Macleod pinged a shot narrowly wide from 30 yards.

Even as full time loomed the chances kept coming and in 89th minute Macleod`s slick switch to Bray only yards out you felt had to announce the winning goal but that too was saved. The last an added time Ayr free kick, was directed on target by Jamie Murphy free kick to be held by Oxborough. Ayr won another set play and Murphy blasted the ball over. An Ayr winner would have been a total injustice but how Dunfermline left with just one point left Neil Lennon and the 532 strong travelling support absolutely dumbfounded.
