The "Glasgow Herald`s" headline and report told the full story.
"BRILLIANT PLAY BY AIRDRIE FORWARDS"

Though Dunfermline Athletic did not deserve the thrashing they suffered on Saturday at Broomfield, there is no shadow of doubt that they were outclassed as well as decisively defeated. It seems strange that on the previous Saturday the teams had drawn 2-2 in a league game at Duntermline.

Airdrie on Saturday`s display, however, are a much better side than two thirds of the teams in Division A. So shrewd a judge as the famous old Celtic player James McMenemy was of the opinion that the very best in the premier league would have reason to fear a tie at Broomtield; will go further and say that Airdre will give any team a run at any place at any time.

There is no team in Scotland better equipped in the inside forward positions. I was especially pleased with the brilliant football of Welsh, Baird and McMillan on a ground that was very hard under a skin of moisture caused by the sun in view of my contention that a good footballer can show his class in any conditions. There was almost a Hungarian-like approach to the task of scoring goals - the studied type of attack which concentrates on making the extra man and leaving him with only the goalkeeper to beat.

No fewer than four of Airdrie`s seven goals were scored through the application of such a policy and Baird`s penalty kick goal came after McCulloch had been pulled down by a goalkeeper faced yet again with an opponent left with only him to circumvent.

Dunfermline`s attacking methods were in complete contrast to Airdrie`s; they evidently had great faith in their centre-forward Dickson, a strong direct young player, but the long punts up the middle merely served to show that Baillie can be as capable a stopper centre-half as any.
