The second leg was an alarming experience for the Pars. A French newspaper had built up bad feeling in the Bordaux area toward the Fifers. Right from the start Dunfermline were jeered by the 20000 crowd. This atmosphere got through to the French players and they were encouraged to impede the Scots at every opportunity.

Unfortunately the Belgian referee was unable to exert any authority to calm things down. Facing such a large deficit Bordeaux knew that their chances of survival were slim and were therefore side-tracked from their normal game of attacking football.

They did however open the scoring in 18th minute when right winger Othily shot past keeper Duff from the edge of the box. Instead of concentrating on breaking down the Athletic defence the French players were more intent on provoking their opponents.

The Dunfermline players, however, kept their heads and defended solidly. Girondins were only able to extend their lead in the closing minutes when Wojeiak scored.

At the final whistle the French fans, who had become incensed at their side`s defeat invaded the pitch. They were met by a squad of policemen who ran on to the pitch to protect the players and officials, and fighting ensued. Players from both sides struggled to reach the safety of the dressing rooms as scuffles and brawls broke out around them.

The Dunfermline party had to remain in their dressing room for an hour after the match ended until order was restored. They were then given a police escort out of a side entrance to the ground and were advised to remain in their hotel for the rest of their stay.
