Dunfermline produced a much improved performance to score four goals and take their first Premier Sports Cup points on Tuesday evening.

The first home match of the 2026/27 season brought Dumbarton to East End Park in Group C of the Premier Sports Cup. After Saturday`s surprisingly poor performance at East Kilbride it was a quick opportunity to turn fortunes around against the League Two visitors.

Neil Lennon made four changes for this encounter - he started Zak Rudden, Luke Robinson, and Alfons Amade while giving Billy Terrell the nod between the sticks. Charlie Gilmour was missing and on to the subs bench went Callumn Morrison, Keith Bray and keeper Musa Dibaga.

From the Dumbarton side that started against St Mirren on Saturday Lewis Spence and Deryn Lang were missing nursing injuries while Tommy Robson dropped to the bench. That made way for Connor Campbell, Scott Tomlinson and Josh Todd. Newly signed on loan from Celtic, Aidan Rice was in goals.

In the very early stages the visitors forced two corners, the second captain Michael Doyle sending the ball wide left. Dunfermline soon turned the match around. A pass from Amade picked out Andrew Tod on the right but his cut back was intercepted before it could reach Oli Shaw. From Kian Corbally`s corner it was Robbie Fraser who crossed into the danger area but Sam Cleall-Harding was offside.

Shaw displayed some fine pace to race away down the left before delivering a cross that Rudden really should have converted but Rice made an important save from close quarters. The resultant corner presented Rudden with a shooting chance but although he hit the shot forcibly it bounced off the Sons keeper.

Dunfermline certainly looked like they had got a grip of the cup tie but for ten minutes, apart from a promising Corbally run, they lacked any real penetration. The opening goal did however come their way in 26th minute after A TOD had robbed the ball off Dumbarton`s Todd some 35 yards out. The 20 year-old Pars striker played the ball off Rudden before slotting it home. 1-0

Rudden was presented with another fantastic opportunity two minutes later from another Fraser cross but mistimed his finish and failed to connect when just a touch was required.

Kearney and Tod combined to set up Rudden but his effort was blocked by Doyle. Next a John Tod bullet from edge of box was fisted away to his right by Rice. Rudden narrowly missed another good cross this time from Robinson. Shaw did get on the end of the next chance from a Corbally free kick 33 yards but the signing from Hamilton Accies shot wide right.

The second Fifers goal arrived in 38th minute. A long ball from Fraser was perfectly weighted for Oli SHAW to run on to and register his first Dunfermline goal. 2-0

The first half ended with a Kearney run and lay off for Shaw but the 20 year old keeper saved. A Corbally pass to Shaw brought out another save out of the on loan stopper and an Amade effort was deflected behind.

After sustaining a brief flurry of activity from Dumbarton, Dunfermline enjoyed plenty of possession in the visitors half. The two goal lead at the break was well deserved.

It looked like Dunfermline would resume from where they left off when Rice held a dangerous Fraser cross at his right hand post. But in 58 minutes a Scott Honeyman cross in from the right was dispatched wide by McIntosh. When Honeyman produced his next ball in from the right it provided the chance for Dumbarton to pull a goal back. Kai KIRKPATRICK met the cross 2-1 on the hour.

Rice held a Tod shot from a Corbally corner. Then the Tod brothers sprung the left side of the Sons defence to set up Rudden for a header that he sent over the crossbar. Rice dived to his left to save from A Tod from another Corbally assist but then the visitors defence was beaten by a great curling shot from outside the penalty box on the left. Andrew TOD with his second of the evening slipped inside the right post. 3-1

Dumbarton failed to make anything of a couple of corners before Pars sub Callumn Morrison had an attempt deflected for a home corner. Further substitutions saw Rory Macleod and Josh Cooper replace Andrew Tod and Zak Rudden. Macleod created a few chances but Cooper sent the first wide left, Rice blocked the next when a fourth goal looked certain and Cooper`s header on a Kearney cross was also saved. The goal that he definitely warranted came his way in 84 minutes, COOPER turned his marker inside out before smashing the ball high into the net. 4-1 Rice denied Cooper a second late on with the goalkeeper reacting well to save the follow-up from Morrison`s shot.

In the end it was a convincing victory and but for the heroics of Rice the margin could have been much greater. With Cove Rangers defeating East Kilbride on the other match in the group, the Pars result left them remaining in fourth place with zero goal difference.
