The Fife Cup final was played at the Clayton Caravan Park Recreation Ground in St Andrews on a cool April Wednesday night. The Pars side was similar to that which negotiated the semi-final against Cowdenbeath augmented by the inclusion of Rory Macleod alongside fellow first team squad members Keith Bray and Ewan McLeod.

From the starting eleven that Greg Shields chose to start their last match against Hill of Beath Hawthorn in the East of Scotland Premier League, there was one enforced change with Thomas Margetts changing sides to play for his parent club. That meant Scott Bryson started in goals for St Andrews. The four other changes including starting former Pars man, Jason Thomson.

Early chances were limited but when Freddie Rowe was taken down on the edge of the box, Macleod took charge of the setplay but drove his shot into the St Andrews wall. The home side took the lead in 24th minute when a Lewis Milne throw in from the left was forced home by THOMSON. 1-0

Six minutes later the Saints increased their lead and again it was the 38 year-old THOMSON on the scoresheet as the ball dipped down behind Margetts. The keeper unfortunate not to benefit from the referee`s whistle. 2-0

Two minutes from the break, a Mark Beveridge cross reached Macleod in front of goal but his effort was blocked.

Half Time: St Andrews United 2 Dunfermline 0

The Pars were kicking down the slope in the second half and Mark Beveridge was subbed for James Hardie. In 55 minutes a Macleod free kick created danger, three quick corners from the right kept up the pressure but the only shot came when the ball was cleared back out to Macleod and his aim was high.

A Keith Bray header dropped narrowly wide but at the midpoint of the second half a Scott DUNN lob found the Dunfermline net. 3-0

It was going to be hard to recover from such a deficit. Dunfermline tried to penetrate the St Andrews United defence but they continued to keep the Pars at bay. Overall the makes shift Dunfermline side were muscled out by a more physical team.
