Teams | Tommy Callaghan

Scottish Cup winner 1968, signed by Jock Stein in March 1963, Tommy made 204 appearances before Celtic paid a record fee of £35,000 in November 1968.

Born: Cowdenbeath, 6 December 1945

Tom Callaghan was signed by Jock Stein from Lochore Welfare in September 1962, and called up at the age of 17 in March the following year. Tom was initially considered to be a winger when he first came into the squad, but soon found himself playing at wing half.

His brother Willie had begun to establish himself in the side as a full back and soon both brothers became regulars in the side. Tom`s influence on the side grew, particularly in European matches. He was a player who seemed particularly suited to these games, as his record of five goals in fourteen European ties shows.

Just as great things were being said of Tom, he broke his leg in a league match against Clyde on 5th November 1966 and was out for three months, which virtually finished the season for him. He did come back the following season however to play a major role in Dunfermline`s Cup winning team in 1968.

In September 1968 Tom was selected alongside his brother for the Scottish League side to play the League of Ireland. On 22nd November 1968 Tom left Dunfermline, joining Celtic for a then record fee for the Glasgow club of £35,000. As usual Stein had done his homework - Tom was only 23 at the time, holder of a Scottish Cup winners medal, and a seasoned European campaigner. Tom went on to play a major role for Celtic during their glory years.
