Alan made his professional debut with Dundee United in season 1974/75 then later transferred to Raith Rovers. He had a lengthy career at Starks Park before coming to Dunfermline. Jim Leishman saw him as the man to tighten the defence and provide some experience, and he played an important role in the early days of Jim Leishman`s management.

Although still a signed player at the start of season 1985-86, the McCathie-Young partnership had been established and there was no place in the side for Alan. He left Dunfermline and returned to the junior ranks in November 1985.
