Ian had spent six seasons as a regular at Broomfield nothing up nearly 200 first team appearances before transferring to East End Park. But for all the potential he showed, his appearances with Dunfermline were limited, partly due to injury.

He did however, come back into the side during the second half of season 1985/86 and was a regular wearing the number six shirt during the vital period when Dunfermline captured the Second Division title.

He moved to Raith Rovers at the start of season 1986/87.
