In November 1998 Dunfermline paid Rangers £200,000 for Scottish under 21 forward David Graham, who had somehow come to be seen as the answer to the Pars goalscoring problems despite only recently making his senior debut.

The 20 year old made a bright start in the 2-1 win against Dundee United but scored only two goals as Dunfermline hurtled towards relegation. In 1999/2000 his confidence seemed to vanish altogether and he didn`t start a single league match as the Pars made an immediate return to the Premier League.

David played under three managers in less than three seasons at East End Park, scored six goals in 45 appearances of which more than half were as substitute. This pattern continued when he went out on loan to Inverness in January 2001, his four appearances all coming off the bench.

His fortunes improved after joining Torquay United a couple of months later. After scoring the goal that kept the Gulls in the Football League, he became a key figure in the club`s rise to promotion in 2003/04, his 23 goals earning a £215,000 transfer to Wigan Athletic.

A year later, with Wigan now in the Premier League, David was transferred to Sheffield Wednesday for a few of £250,000.
