Signing dfor Cowdenbeath in 1986/87 Roddy Grant made an instant impact by scoring on his debut and then netting a hattrick in his first home game. He was Cowdenbeath`s top goalscorer in both that and the following season, resulting in a £12,500 transfer to St Johnstone in October 1988.
The Saints gained promotion to the Premier Division in 1990 with Roddy the club`s leading goalscorer, though he found goals harder to come by in the top flight. After falling out of favour at McDiarmid Park, he was signed by Dunfermline in 1992 along with Lindsay Hamilton as part of a deal that took Andy Rhodes to St Johnstone.
His strength and aerial prowess were expected to benefit the Pars but it didn`t work out. In what was a difficult season under Jocky Scott, Roddy made 35 appearances 15 of them as substitute and scoring just five goals.
At the end of the season he moved up to the Premier League to play for Partick Thistle, with whom he managed 20 goals in 69 matches before rejoining St Johnstone in 1995.
In 1996/97 he won another First Division title medal as well as being voted the SPFA Player of the Year.
