His career started with local club Hill of Beath Swifts before signing `˜S` forms with Dundee. Half way through his fifth year at High School he left to sign full-time with Dundee, but in more than three years with Dundee he never played once with the first team.
Jim Leishman brought him back to Dunfermline, a club he had supported as a youngster and he became a regular playing either in right midfield or as a conventional right back.
He was an important player in season 1985/86 but by the time Premier League football arrived in 1987 he was out of the first team picture and moved to Brechin.
