Dunfermline-born, Ian started his footballing life as a ball boy at Dunfermline. He played his early football with Hill of Beath and then Inverkeithing before playing juvenile with Dunfermline Railway Club.

After playing in a trial, Ian became Jim Leishman`s first signing in October 1983. He steadily worked his way into the first team and became a regular during season 1985/86. Halfway through the following season and not certain of a place in the first team, Ian transferred to St Johnstone.

A left-sided midfielder, Ian had a terrific shot. His claim to fame is that he scored the only goal of the game in Dunfermline`s Centenary Match in 1985, scoring against Scotland keeper Jim Leighton.
