Grant`s career started with Crieff Earngrove as a sixteen year old, and stayed there for six years until joining Jeanfield Swifts. At Jeanfield his prolific goalscoring began to be noticed by senior clubs, and although he was late into the professional game, Pat Stanton moved to sign him for Dunfermline after a trial in 1981.

After that he never looked back and in season 1985/86 formed a successful forward partnership with John Watson which was one of the key features in getting the Pars` promotion.

Nicknamed `˜Shaggy`, he was popular with the fans throughout his East End Park career as much for his ability to create chances for others as his own goalscoring. He went on to make nearly 250 appearances and scored more than 50 goals in his six seasons with the club.
