Dunfermline Athletic

Teams | Mike Leonard

Signed in March 1978 Mike Leonard became a cult hero at East End Park

Born: Glasgow 19th October 1953
Signed: 14th March 1978
Position: Centre Forward
Previous Clubs: Celtic, Sligo Rovers
Later Clubs: Pollok Juniors

Released by Celtic in 1976, Mike signed for League of Ireland side, Sligo Rovers. Early in 1978 Mike returned to Scotland and Harry Melrose signed the 24 year old after a trial. Five days later on 18th March 1978 Mike made his Dunfermline debut.

Mike scored twice in the 6-1 rout of Brechin City and then against Meadowbank two days later he netted a hattrick, giving fans hope of what might be. But Mike was either hero or zero with the fans - one minute infuriating them, the next scoring a hattrick.

He was ever present in 1978-1979 making 47 appearances and his 24 goals went a long way to helping the club finish second behind Berwick Rangers. His fellow professionals voted him the Second Division Player of the Year but his goalscoring dried up and by the end of 1980-1981 Mike was allowed to join junior side Pollok Juniors.
