Dunfermline Athletic

Teams | Joe McBride

Joined Dunfermline in 1970 and helped the Pars avoid relegation. He scored 12 goals in his 28 matches for Dunfermline.

One of the most prolific goalscorers in the Scottish game. Joe McBride began his senior career with Kilmarnock before being signed by English champions Wolves, where he couldn`t settle. A spell with Luton Town followed before he joined Partick Thistle. There he scored 41 goals in 74 matches and was snapped up Motherwell who paid £5000 for him in November 1962.

In less than three seasons at Fir Park he scored 88 goals earning the club £22,000 when he became Jock Stein`s first signing as Celtic manager. In 1965/66 he was the Scottish First Division`s joint top goalscorer alongside Dunfermline`s Alex Ferguson and was on course for even more the next season when he suffered a serious knee injury in December 1966. He never regained his place in the team and, after 86 goals in 94 appearances for Celic he moved tio Hibs in November 1968.

Joe`s goalscoring made him so popular with fans at Easter Road that they were furious when he was sold to Dunfermline for £3000. Now aged 32, he marked his debut on Boxing Day 1970 by scoring twice in a 5-0 defeat of Ayr United.

He helped the Pars avoid relegation and went on to record 12 goals in 28 matches before joining his last club, Clyde in October 1971.
