While at Butterburn Youth Club Dave was chosen for the Scottish youth team and amateur youth team at centre forward and for the Scottish Boys Club team at centre half.

At one time he was provisionally signed by Dundee but was never called up. He was signed from Broughty Athletic by George Farm in July 1969, and as a centre half Dave McNicoll made an early impression. He made his Pars debut on 6th December 1969 in the 0-0 draw v Motherwell at Fir Park.

Dave played in both legs of the Fairs Cup tie against Anderlecht. On 24th January 1970, McNicoll made history by becoming the youngest ever captain of Dunfermline for the Scottish Cup tie against Celtic at Parkhead. He was only 18 and had fewer than a dozen games under his belt.

Sought after by among others Liverpool, McNicoll suffered a cruciate ligament injury that severely hampered the rest of his career. Dunfermline freed him at the age of 23 after 162 First team appearances.

Dave joined Montrose for season 1975-76 and in October 1977 went on to play for Hearts. He moved to St Johnstone and finished his career at East Fife in 1983.
