Dunfermline Athletic

Teams | Ron Mailer

Captain in 1961 of the first Dunfermline side ever to win the Scottish Cup.

Ron signed for Dunfermline in March 1951 from junior side Auchterader Primrose, and went on to make 325 appearances for the Athletic. He retired from the game in 1964, and his 13 years at the club make him one of DAFC`s most loyal servants.

Captain of the 1961 cup winning team, Ron was an adaptable player, who began as an inside forward, but went on to play in most other positions during his lengthy spell at the club. It was however in the right-half position that he made most of his appearances for the club. Included amongst the appearances he made, were six in European ties, including the famous 6-2 victory over Valencia in the Fairs Cup.

His final appearance for the Pars was a 1-1 draw with St Mirren at Love Street on 4th April 1964. As a reward for his loyalty, a testimonial match with Czech side Dukla Prague was arranged for November 1965. The Czech side`s player pool included 12 internationalists, with a total of 254 international caps. The match ended 2-2, with 8,000 supporters turning out to pay tribute to Ron Mailer on a freezing cold night.

Ron Mailer was an ever present during the 1961 cup run and became a keen golfer living in Auchterarder until he died in March 2018 at the age of 85.
