Dunfermline Athletic

Teams | Peter Millar

Followed closely in the footsteps of Barrie Mitchell moving from Arbroath after just eight appearances.

Born: 21/04/51, Motherwell
Position: Midfielder

Peter Millar had played only five games and another three as substitute for the Arbroath senior team before he was signed by Manager Farm for a fee reported as £12,000. Peter interrupted his job as a draughtsman to take up full time football at Dunfermline in November 1969. He began his football at Netherton YMCA in Wishaw. From there he moved to Hamilton Avondale and then into junior football with Forth Wanderers.

As at his previous clubs he played for Forth at half back and spent three seasons with the juniors before being signed by Arbroath. Prior to that he had trials at Motherwell and Hibs.

Peter started only five games at Arbroath and made three substitute appearances before he was signed by manager George Farm. He had been utilised mainly as an inside forward by the Second Division side.

He scored from the spot for the Pars at Fir Park in 4-1 win during season 1971/72 and this might have been the catalyst for Motherwell boss Bobby Howitt, to snap him up in the summer of 1972.

Millar is best known for his time at Motherwell where he played 238 games for the club during his 1972-1979 period with the Fir Park club. He made one representative appearance for the Scottish League against the English League in 1974.

He was allowed to moved on and join newly promoted Dundee for 1979/80 season before rounding off his career in the United States where he played for Phoenix Inferno and Cleveland Force.

On his return to Scotland Peter was involved in Junior football, managing Lanark United, Shotts Bon Accord and Cambuslang Juniors.

Millar died on 17 June 2013, having been suffering from a brain tumour at the age of 62.
