He started life at St Mirren Boys Club where none other than Alex Ferguson signed him. When Ferguson moved to Aberdeen, Stevie signed a full-time contract with the Dons and was there for three years. In 1981, Pat Stanton signed him from Aberdeen for a fee of £7000.

To begin with he played as centre forward but later reverted to the more familiar midfield role. His trademarks were long cross-field passes and shots from set pieces.

Stevie was the mainstay of the Pars team which rose through the Divisions. He was never afraid to have a go at goal, scoring some spectacular volleys and free kicks. After two breathtaking goals in season 1985-1986, Stevie earned the nickname `Zico` after the legendary Brazilian.

Towards the end of season 1985/86, Stevie left Dunfermline to try Australian football. It didn`t work out and he was back the following season.

In eight years at East End Park, Stevie made 275 appearances scoring 48 goals and was one of the most likeable and popular players at the club.
