`Big` John Salton gained experience with Hibs and Queen of the South before moving to East End Park, where he quickly became a favourite of the fans. Although he stood six foot tall, John was powerful in the air and always posed a threat in the opposition box, scoring ten goals for Dunfermline.
His performances in 1978-1979 earned John a nomination in the Second Division Players` Player of the Year, the title awarded to teammate Mike Leonard. As well as aerial prowess, John was a strong tackler and extremely mobile for a central defender. His fearlessness saw him pick up a few knocks and suspensions.
Pat Stanton took over as manager and preferred Willie Leishman in defence and John rarely figured for the rest of the season. Seen by the new management as "injury prone" John was handed a free transfer in December 1981 after making 160 appearances for Dunfermline.
