A centre forward signed by Dunfermline from Glasgow juniors, St Anthony`s in September 1921, Jimmy Smith was an outstanding prospect but his versatility led t9 him being shuffled around the forward line to accommodate players of a lesser ability.
In March 1923 the club`s top scorer was inexplicably allowed to join Clydebank on loan, a decision that infuriated supporters and caused a rift amongst the directors. After the Bankies clinched promotion his transfer was made permanent for what seemed an almost derisory fee.
Jimmy`s play improved further on being switched to outside right and his participation in a Scottish international trial match resulted in his selection as a travelling reserve for the trip to Wembley in April 1924.
Later that year Hearts signed Jimmy for a fee of £2,130 and over the next seven seasons scored a very creditable 51 goals in 174 league and cup matches for the Tynecastle club. He also netted twice in three Scottish League appearances, the last alongside Dunfermline legend Bobby Skinner in October 1927.
He went on to play for Cork City in 1931/32 and then spent a couple of seasons with East Stirlingshire before joining his last senior club, Dundee United. He scored 21 goals in 59 matches for United.
