Signed for the Pars in November 1996 and after 28 appearances went out on loan to Ayr United

Glaswegian Steve Welsh began his senior career with Cambridge United before moving on to Peterborough United in August 1991. He broke into the first team straight away and crowned an impressive season by helping the club win the Third Division play off final at Wembley. Peterborough then finished tenth in the second tier of English football before being relegated in 1994.

Later that year Steve joined Premier Division Partick Thistle but enjoyed no better luck with the Jags suffered a controversial play-off defeat by Dundee United at the end of season 1995/96.

Despite interest from Dunfermline, Steve returned to Peterborough (largely because he hadn`t been able to sell his house there), a brief interlude which ended when he signed for the Pars in November 1996.

He adapted quickly to shore up a porous defence as Dunfermline finished fifth in the Premier a Division but injuries and a loss of confidence ensured that he was rarely seen in 1997/98.

After 28 appearances he was allowed to go to Ayr United initially on loan until manager Gordon Dalziel signed for the rest of the season. He played 25 times as Ayr finished third on the First Division, their highest league position in nineteen years.
