Three operations later it was spring of 2000 before Darren re-established himself in the Dons team. He played in European competition against Bohemians, Nistru Otaci and Hertha Berlin.

Captained the Dons in season 2001-2002 when they finished 4th in the SPL. His leadership qualities attracted Jimmy Calderwood who admires the "engine" that drives Darren at full steam throughout a match.

He packs a powerful shot and has scored some important goals, especially from the penalty spot. Season 2006-07 saw Darren for the first time, not having brother Derek at the same club. Injury restricted his appearances in the latter half of season 2006-07.
