When he joined Dunfermline on loan from Burnley as a 28-year-old in February 1998 Richard Huxford had gained a lot of experience in non-league and lower-league English football.

He made his debut in a 5-1 defeat at Parkhead on 25 February 1998 but during the rest of that season he did enough to convince manager Bert Paton to offer him a contract and he was a regular fixture, usually at right-back, during 1998-1999. However, when the team was relegated at the end of that season he was deemed surplus to requirements at the start of the following season.

His 40th and final game was a home 1-1 draw against St Mirren on 11 September 1999 when he scored his only goal for the Pars. In 1999-2000 he suffered from knee injuries and left the club to join Alloa Athletic at the end of that season.

After leaving he played part-time with Alloa, Partick Thistle and Berwick Rangers while studying for a degree in Sports Science at Edinburgh University. He worked for the Scottish Institute of Sport and coached at Manchester United, Crewe Alexandra and Carolina Railhawks. His final appearance in Scottish football was with Elgin City in 2006-07.
