Played in the 1949 League Cup Final against East Fife. The attendance of 39744 at Hampden on 29th October 1949 was a record for a match between two Fife teams
George Henderson was a prolific goal scorer, who played for a number of clubs, including The Pars. It seemed that any club needing goals sent for George.
His career began with Third Lanark and he amassed 34 goals from his 104 League matches with The Hi Hi`s. For season 1947/48, Stirling Albion acquired his services, the first of four spells he had in Stirling. George scored 25 goals from 25 games and had a short spell with Dundee United, for whom he scored 3 goals in 5 matches. He returned to Annfield for a further 11 games and 11 goals, before he was signed by Dunfermline Athletic.
This was the first of two spells at East End Park and he had the remarkable ratio of 29 goals from 27 League matches. He was also part of Dunfermline`s run to the League Cup Final in October 1949, which The Pars lost 3-0 to East Fife after beating favourites Hibs 2-1 in the semi-final at Tynecastle.
Soon after the final, George was on his travels again. This time St Mirren paid £5,500 for his services. His spell at Love Street was much shorter and he had only played 10 games, with 5 goals before Stirling Albion signed him for the third time in 1950. In a three year stint back at Annfield, he netted another 43 goals from 79 League matches.
In 1953, Dunfermline came calling again and George played another 20 games for The Pars, adding another 16 League goals to his tally. In late October of that year, Athletic were the last unbeaten team in British senior football.
George was very much a first team regular, but as the team fell away, he was on the move again, this time to Albion Rovers, who had ended The Pars unbeaten run. Injuries had begun to have an adverse effect on his playing career and without playing for Rovers he moved on to Alloa.
His luck was no better there and, again without appearing, he made his 4th and final move to Stirling Albion in 1955. George`s career was virtually over. Only 4 more appearances and no goals before his final unsuccessful move, to Stranraer, where he hung up his boots in 1956.
His career brought him 166 goals in 285 appearances (League only). With The Pars he played 47 times and scored 45 goals (again League only). A remarkable ratio!
