A Scotland Youth internationalist, he had a spell with Raith Rovers before joining Dunfermline Athletic, Ian was signed during the 1968 cup run to provide cover for the injured Alex Edwards. Although not cup tied at the Rovers, he was ineligible for the second round and made his cup debut against Partick Thistle in the Quarter Final.

He was on the bench for both semi finals against St Johnstone and when a substitute for Tommy Callaghan in the replay, scored the extra time winner to set up the Pars third Scottish Cup final in seven years. Ian started at Hampden in the Final and scored from the penalty spot to put the Pars 2-0 up against Hearts in a match that they went on to famously win 3-1.

St Mirren manager Alex Wright paid £4,000 to Dunfermline for Ian Lister and his debut there saw a 2-0 win over Aberdeen and in the next match he was the hero with a multitude of accurate passing which set up a 2-1 victory over Ayr United.

After St. Mirren he had a second spell at Raith Rovers and also played for Berwick Rangers and Inverness Caledonian.
