When Andy Dickson took over managerial responsibility in 1955, one of his first signings was a 19-year-old winger George Peebles. Dunfermline paid £100 for his signature from Dunipace Juniors and it was to prove some of the best money the club ever spent.

George was not the tallest but his clever wing play was a joy to watch. George`s play began to get recognition nationally with Liverpool showing interest in his progress and in 1958 he was chosen as a reserve for the Scotland Under 23 team to play Wales.

When Jock Stein took over, George was central to the 1960-1961 Scottish Cup run. Ultimately, George made 185 appearances under Jock Stein – the highest by any player. An outside right who still scored a total of 85 goals, including 6 in European competitions.

Although George didn`t score in the cup final victory, it was his cross that Dave Thomson headed home for the first goal. In the famous Inter City Fairs Cup game against Valencia, George scored the first and fifth goals. His second goal was a beauty, chesting down an overhead kick by Alex Smith, racing past the defence and scoring from 12 yards.

George played his final game for the Pars on 16th April 1966 having made 413 appearances – the fourth highest in the club`s history.

After 11 years at the club, George transferred to Stirling Albion for £4,000 in August 1966, where he was a player, coach and finally manager.
