Eddie Connachan was considering giving up the game before Dunfermline signed him from Dalkeith Thistle.

A miner at Prestongrange Colliery, he was first choice `keeper for the best part of two seasons, despite strong competition from Jim Herriot.

Restored to the team for the Scottish Cup quarter-final, five consecutive clean sheets played a vital part in bringing the trophy back to Dunfermline for the first time but it was his two performances against Celtic in the Final that turned the miner into a legend.

Turning full-time, Eddie became the first Dunfermline player in forty years to represent Scotland when he lined up against Czechoslovakia on 29th November 1961. By the following season Jim Herriot had largely taken over and in August 1963, Eddie was transferred to Middlesbrough for £5,500.

He played over 100 matches for Middlesbrough between 1963 and 1966, when he returned to Scotland to sign for Falkirk.

Later Connachan emigrated to South Africa playing for Port Elizabeth City and East London Celtic before retiring in 1972. He died in South Africa on 28 January 2021.
