Few players arrive at Dunfermline directly from Manchester United but William Stewart Chalmers is one.

He was capped at schoolboy level before signing for his local club, Queen`s Park, where he continued his studies to become a chartered accountant.

Capped twice by Scotland Amateurs, he gained full international recognition on 23rd February 1929 when he helped Scotland to a 7-3 victory over Ireland. Shortly after he turned professional with Hearts before joining Manchester United in 1932.

After making his Pars debut on 22nd September 1934, this hugely talented and influential player helped Dunfermline achieve its highest ever league position, not just once but in two successive seasons.

He retired in 1938.
