Thomson was signed in August 1959 from Bo`ness United mainly to play in the reserve team.
He only played ten times for Dunfermline scoring four goals, but two of those appearances were in the Scottish Cup semi final and final replays of 1960-1961. He scored a superb opening goal against Celtic in the Final replay which attracted other clubs` interest and he was transferred to Leicester City for £12k, a then club record fee, days before the 1961-1962 season.
Primarily a reserve player, Dave first came to the attention of Leicester City manager, Matt Gillies, when the teams met in floodlight friendly, in September 1960.
