A rugged left back with a turn of pace and a powerful shot, Bonar made 212 first team appearances for Dunfermline Athletic.

Local lad Bonar Mercer joined Dunfermline from Townhill Boys Club and played in the senior team until going to university in 1973. He played football for Stirling Albion and Montrose and rugby for Kilmarnock before returning to Dunfermline Athletic in 1977.

A robust and whole-hearted full-back, Bonar then played a further five seasons for the Pars before leaving in 1982.
