Joined Dunfermline in 1969 as one of a new generation to maintain Dunfermline`s prominence in Scottish football.

Billy`s football career started in Glasgow where he represented Glasgow Schools. He trained for a spell with Queen`s Park until a broken leg sidelined him. After a further spell in amateur football Billy had trials at Rangers but with no offer from them he signed Junior for Kirkintilloch Rob Roy.

His chance of senior football came when he was signed by George Farm for Dunfermline.

During his two seasons with the Pars, Billy failed to command a regular starting place, but despite that he went on to have a long career in Scottish football, particularly at Queen of the South where he went on to his first management post.
