Perth born, Eric followed in the footsteps of Eddie Connachan and Jim Herriot as yet another quality goalkeeper at East End Park. In March 1965 he made his first team debut in a league match against Dundee, still only 18. By the end of the season he was first team choice after Herriot`s departure to Birmingham City.
It appeared that a long career at Dunfermline might lie ahead but an injury in December 1966 meant another keeper, Bent Martin, took over in goals and when Eric returned he couldn`t regain his place in the side. By then however, Eric had been impressing clubs across the country and Southampton paid £25,000 for his services in March 1967.
That began a fantastic career at the Dell that lasted till 1975 and included 250 league appearances. Eric left Southampton to move to the USA where a broken leg finished his playing career.
