In 1971-1972 Dunfermline were doomed to relegation but nearly avoided it thanks to the introduction of a 16 year old striker. Ken Mackie made his debut on 11th March 1972, scoring in a 2-1 win over Hibs.
Lively and very strong for his age, he had natural goalscoring ability. In the Second Division he formed a superb partnership with Graham Shaw, and the Pars finished as Britain`s top scorers with over 100 goals.
Back in the top flight, Mackie got off to a great start but by this time he was better known as the player who turned down a move to Rangers. The two clubs agreed a fee of £50,000 but were stunned when the player rejected the transfer. As Dunfermline struggled, Mackie`s form and confidence deserted him and Athletic accepted £6000 from Falkirk in 1976.
Ken Mackie scored 58 goals in 151 appearances for Dunfermline, excellent considering the poor period the club was going through.
