Pat Gardner`s signing by George Farm from Raith Rovers in 1967 came as no surprise since Pars new manager had signed him twice before. Costing a club record £17,000, he was a direct replacement for Ibrox-bound Alex Ferguson even though his style of play was completely different.
Top scorer in two of his four full seasons, he was also responsible for some of Dunfermline`s most significant goals, such as the four he netted on the 1967/68 Scottish Cup run.
The Final itself was perhaps Pat`s greatest display for the club and his double went a long way to bringing the cup back to East End. Pat moved to Dundee United in January 1972, becoming Jim McLean`s first managerial signing for United. He moved briefly to Motherwell then Arbroath before starting coaching at Airdrie.
