A former Scottish youth international, Jim was converted to central defence by Jock Stein. An intelligent player who would sweep up anything that came his way, Jim Fraser formed a tremendous partnership with Roy Barry at the heart of a superb Dunfermline defence, the differing styles of the two players complementing each other perfectly.

Pars` famous Cup win over Celtic in 1967/68 was marred by Auld`s shocking challenge that left Jim with a badly injured knee. Although he returned to play in both semi-final matches against St. Johnstone, he was controversially omitted from the Cup Final line-up.

After a memorable 1968/69 in which Jim scored in the Cup-Winners` Cup semi-final defeat by Slovan Bratislava, a broken leg meant that he missed most of the following season. He moved to Airdrie but injuries had prematurely ended his career. After a long fight with cancer, Jim passed away in March 2002, aged only 55.
