Alex Ferguson`s senior career began with Queens Park where he was capped at under 18 level, before joining St Johnstone in 1960.

Unable to hold down a regular place, his repeated transfer requests resulted in an exchange deal for Dunfermline`s Dan McLindon in 1964.

He settled in quickly at East End Park, scoring in his opening three matches and notching the first of his seven hat tricks for the Pars. Alex was the club`s top scorer in each of his three seasons and his total of 90 goals in 136 appearances persuaded Rangers to pay a record fee between two Scottish clubs of £65,000.

In 1965/66 Alex was the joint highest scorer in the First Division along with Celtic`s Joe McBride. His total of 31 league goals remains a club record for the top flight.

During Scotland`s 1967 World Tour Alex scored ten goals in seven matches. As it was unofficial no caps were awarded.

After a good season at Ibrox his opportunities were restricted after the arrival of Colin Stein from Hibs. With Stein suspended Alex was selected for the 1969 Scottish Cup Final but he was blamed for the first of Celtic`s four goals and never played for the club again.

His former Dunfermline boss, Willie Cunningham, then took Alex to Falkirk where he stayed for four years until new manager John Prentice rescinded his coaching duties, prompting his departure for Ayr United. He scored ten goals in 30 appearances for the Honest Men before taking up the vacant managerial position at East Stirlingshire in 1974.
