John Cushley was a commanding centre half who joined Dunfermline in 1970 from West Ham, having started with Celtic. He played two seasons for Dunfermline Athletic before moving to Dumbarton. Glasgow University languages graduate Cushley also captained Dunfermline to Quiz Ball success in 1971.

He made his first team debut for Celtic in March 1963, in a match against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park. Cushley found himself in the shadow of his teammate and former schoolmate, Billy McNeill, and many of his appearances for Celtic were dependent on McNeill`s absence due to injury or international appearances. Nonetheless, Cushley played 41 games for Celtic, until he left the club in 1967 in a £10,000 transfer to West Ham United.

He returned to Scottish football at Dunfermline three years later and was a popular figure at East End Park both during and after his career there.

Sadly died at the age of 65 from Motor Neurone Disease in March 2008.
