Callaghan came through the youth ranks at Dunfermline and broke briefly into the team in 1984/85 season. He was back again in season 1987/88, making a great second debut as Dunfermline thrashed Dundee 6-1. However the Pars were relegated and Callaghan couldn`t keep his place.
He spent most of the next two seasons on loan at Cowdenbeath, Clyde and Walsall before being released in 1990.
