Hall joined the club in 1975/76 season from Hamilton Academical. He was lined up to sign before Melrose officially took the manager`s Job. He suffered a recurring knee injury and had three operations on it before succumbing to it at the start of 1977/78 season.

He was given a job as reserve team coach but his health was deteriorating and he died 4 days after entering hospital in September 1978. He passed away at the age of 28 on 28th September 1978.

The club played Swansea City in a Testimonial match for Ian to assist his family who had emigrated to Canada by that time in July 1980.
