Thompson joined the club in March 1986 from Alloa for £5k to add grit to the midfield in pursuit of promotion. He played in the last eight games scoring twice in an impressive run that resulted in winning the Second Division title.
The following year his combative style was crucial in the Pars again making the step up to the Premier League with successive promotions. He left the club for St Johnstone in 1987 and later became manager of Kirkintilloch Rob Roy. Sadly he was killed in an accident on 3 November 1996, aged just 40, when a hydraulic tower he was working on collapsed.
