Allan McGregor made his professional debut at 20 as a 73rd-minute substitute for Stefan Klos in a 6-0 rout of Forfar Athletic in the Scottish Cup on the 24th February 2002, featuring in the same team as future Dunfermline Athletic coach Neil McCann.
McGregor went on to play over 500 games for Rangers, but his third was against the Pars, the first team to score against him when Stevie Crawford netted four minutes from time to salvage a draw at East End Park.
Allan became a Scottish Premier League starter after joining Dunfermline on loan for the 2005-06 campaign after a season with St Johnstone in the First Division. McGregor initially sat in the opening month behind Bryn Halliwell, whose son is now in the Rangers academy.
His debut came at Rugby Park against Kilmarnock, managed by future Athletic boss Jim Jefferies and his successor sans one Allan Johnston, who was playing for Killie.
Dunfermline lost the game 3-2 thanks to Danny Invincible, who ghosted past the defence to net the winner in 90th minute. It was the Pars fourth defeat in five league games, with Jim Leishman only lasting another month in the dugout before being supplanted by now Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny.
It was not a vintage league season for the Pars, who finished 11th, with McGregor keeping five cleans sheets. However, like several years in the mid-2000s, a cup run made it a memorable campaign. Dunfermline saw off Albion Rovers in the second round before overcoming Killie in a sensational 4-3 in
Ayrshire before trouncing Hibernian 3-0 at EEP. Athletic would go to the capital for the semi-final against Livingston, where the tie was settled by a Darren Young penalty which saw the club in its first League Cup final in 15 years.
Celtic awaited the Fifers at Hampden Park. DA had already beaten the Hoops once that season, a famous 1-0 in Glasgow when Greg Ross scored i17th minute with McGregor between the sticks. It remains the last time Pars has won against the Parkhead outfit.
In the final, the Celtic team all wore the number 7 on their shorts in honour of former player Jimmy Johnstone, who had died a week earlier. The actual number 7 on that day, Maciej Żurawski netted the winner before Shaun Maloney and Dion Dublin added late goals. McGregor returned to Ibrox at the end of that season.
