James Ferguson first played for the club as a trialist on 12 May 1945 in a 2-1 away win at Dundee in the North-Eastern League. He was subsequently signed by Sandy Archibald on 15 May from juvenile club Hill of Beath Star, who received £5 in compensation. Ferguson was to earn £2 per game!

On 2 June 1945 he played another North-Eastern League match, the Pars beating East Fife 4-2 at East End Park. He was in good company in these matches – the half-back trio was Forbes, Kelly and Cunningham, who all went on to great things in English football, and Cunningham captained Scotland in the World Cup.

His next game was the Mitchell Cup against Rangers ‘A`. These were definitely considered first team matches – Rangers had agreed to field their reserve team in the North-Eastern League from 1941 as it was the only way to make it viable.

Scores were:
19 May – Rangers ‘A` 1 Dunfermline 0
26 May – Dunfermline 1 Rangers ‘A` 1 (Rangers scored in extra-time)

He made one further appearance, the opening match of the unofficial ‘B` Division on 11 August 1945 – Dunfermline hammered Dundee United 7-0.

His contract was cancelled on 11 October 1945 and he was reinstated to the juniors (even though he hadn`t played at that level before, so probably a post-war amnesty) in July 1946, joining Kinglassie Colliery.
