Ian Ferguson was one of Jimmy Calderwood`s first signing after taking over from Dick Campbell as manager. Ferguson was a tough tackling no nonsense midfielder although he did play a few games as a sweeper behind the defence.
Ferguson came to the club having won pretty much everything it is possible to win in Scottish football having been an integral part of the Rangers squad that won 9 League Championships in a row and is in the Rangers Hall of Fame.
He began his career in 1984 at Clyde playing in 26 league games scoring 4 goals before moving to St. Mirren in 1986. While at Love Street he scored the winner for the Buddies as they defeated Dundee United 1-0 in the 1987 Scottish Cup final.
Nine months later Ian began the most successful period of his career as Graeme Souness paid £850,000 to take him to Ibrox which is still the record fee for a player sold by the Paisley club. Ian played in 336 games for Rangers scoring 46 goals and was capped 9 nine times by Scotland while at the Ibrox club.
He then moved to East End Park in 2000 as Dick Advocaat looked to build his own team. Ian was to make one of the central midfield spots his own as The Pars gained promotion back to the SPL and was subsequently made club captain. At the end of the 2001/02 season he announced his intention to leave Dunfermline and quit Scottish football in favour of a move to Australia.
Ian played for two clubs in Australia, Northern Spirit and Central Coast Mariners before starting his managerial career.
His first club as manager was North Queensland Fury but he only lasted a year there due to the club folding due to financial problems.
After that he moved onto Perth Glory, firstly as assistant and then head coach after the resignation of David Mitchell. Ian managed Perth Glory to the A-League Grand Final in 2012 but they were defeated 2-1 in controversial circumstances by Brisbane Roar.
