Played with Kennoway under the instruction of coach Bob McPhail from age four to ten before going to Celtic from U11 to U15 and joined Dunfermline at U15 level. Represented Fife Schools at U14. Won a winners medal in Dunfermline team that won the Reserve League Cup for season 2009-10. Captain of the Dunfermline team that got to the SFA Youth Cup Final in 2012-13.
Byrne joined the Dunfermline youth set up from the Celtic youths in 2008. Having sat most of the 2011-2012 Premier League season on the subs bench, Byrne broke into the first team in 2012 making his debut, at the age of 19, as a 75th minute sub for Ryan Wallace in the League Cup game against Montrose on 28th August 2012. He went on to establish himself in the team`s midfield over the next four seasons. He was surprisingly released after winning the title in 2015/16.
He moved to Livingston on a free transfer and went on to consecutive promotions from League One to the Scottish Premiership over the next two seasons.
