A former youth with Edinburgh based Hutchison Vale until the age of 16, Paul joined the youth ranks of Ipswich Town in 2006 and remained with the set up until the age of 19.
His first professional contract was with Livingston after manager Gary Bollan brought him north and in his first season at Almondvale he helped the club climb two leagues in as many seasons, winning back to back titles in the Third and Second Divisions, signing a contract extension along the way before competing for two seasons in the First Division.
At the end of his deal in the summer of 2013, Paul signed for Raith Rovers where he remained for two seasons, competing in the Championship. At the end of his Raith deal, he signed up for two seasons with Falkirk in July 2015, helping the Bairns to back to back second place finishes in 2015-16 and 2016-17.
Following his release from Falkirk in July 2018, Paul was signed on a two year deal at Dundee United and played a crucial part at centre half in Robbie Neilson`s Championship winning side. After making 52 appearances for United, Paul discovered that his contract was not going to be renewed at Tannadice.
