Paton followed his Queen of the South manager Johnston to East End Park in June 2015 on a one year deal. He was number one for assists as the team ran away with the title in style.
He signed a one year extension to his contract. His second year was hampered by injuries but again he signed on for another year however he never played for the team after January 2018 and was released at the end of the season.
The Greenock born striker is a product of Aberdeen`s youth academy and he made his senior debut in 2008 while out on loan to Brechin City. He got valuable first team experience there and in December of that year broke into the Aberdeen first team. His five first team appearances in 2008-09 was followed by 39 the next.
The arrival of Scott Vernon limited his first team outings the following season and on 31 August 2011, he joined Stockport County on a six-month loan. When he returned to Aberdeen at the end of November after sustaining an injury, he had made 15 appearances and scored four goals for County in the Blue Square Premier League (Conference).
On 31 August 2012, Paton was released by Aberdeen when Craig Brown deemed him surplus to requirements. After a break of six months he signed for Queen of the South. Michael made 71 appearances for the Doonhammers scoring eleven goals.
