John was 31 when Jim McIntyre brought him back to East End Park for season 2011-12. The Manager said on signing him that he was really pleased to bring in someone with great experience and a proven Premier League player. John was captain of St Mirren for his last three seasons and he is a real leader on the park.
Jim Jefferies appointed him U20s coach for 2012-13 and enjoyed the flexibility to bring him into the first team squad as cover when required. That cover was desperately needed when the playing staff was cut on going into administration and John found himself playing in ten of the final 14 games of the 2012-13 season.
A local boy from High Valleyfield, John Potter started his professional career at Celtic signing for them in 1996 and was captain of the reserve team but made no first-team appearances. He came to East End Park in 1999 as a 19 year-old and made his debut at centre-half in a 2-1 home win over Ayr United on 25 September 1999. His only goal for the club was scored in a 2-1 win at Airdrie on 26 February 2000 but his opportunities became limited as the Pars recruited defenders of the standard of Andrius Skerla, Youssef Rossi and Scott Wilson. He made 28 appearances between 1999 and 2002.
`Potts` then moved on to Clyde where was he was an ever present in the first team and for 2004-05 made the captain. He joined St Mirren in July 2005, winning promotion in the first season there.
Went out on loan until the end of season 2011/12 to Queen of the South at the end of January 2012. Only goal for Dunfermline was on 26th February 2000 against Airdrieonians.
After the Pars` relegation from the Premier League in 2011-2012, he was appointed joint coach with Craig Dargo of the under-20 side although he was still registered as a player.
Following Administration in March 2013 John`s services as an experienced player were vital and he became a mainstay of the defence as the club struggled unsuccessfully to avoid relegation to League 1. In 2013-14 his only appearance was in the final home game of the season, a 1-1 draw with Rangers on 3 May 2014.
John was the heir apparent to Jim Jefferies as first-team manager and the intention was that he would take over the reins at the end of the 2014-15 season. However, after a disappointing run of results, Jefferies left the club on 16 December 2014 and Potter was appointed manager with Neil McCann as his assistant.
At the end of the season he returned to his coaching position and Allan Johnston and Sandy Clark came in as the new management team for 2015-2016.
Was part of Jack Ross` management team at Sunderland and Hibernian before becoming manager in his own right at Kelty Hearts in 2022.
