Dunfermline-born, Ian started his footballing life as a ball boy at Dunfermline. He played his early football with Hill of Beath and then Inverkeithing before playing juvenile with Dunfermline Railway Club.
After playing in a trial, Ian became Jim Leishman`s first signing in October 1983. He made his debut in January 1984 and played twice more in the league that season.The next season he played a further 3 times and added a further goal. He made 30 appearances in 1985/86 season adding 5 goals as the team won promotion.
Halfway through the following season and not certain of a place in the first team, Ian moved on to St Johnstone after 10 more appearances and a further 2 goals.
A left-sided midfielder, Ian had a terrific shot. His claim to fame is that he scored the only goal of the game in Dunfermline`s Centenary Match in 1985, scoring against Scotland keeper Jim Leighton.
